Coastwatch Watchkeeper Volunteers
Have you heard of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI)?
NCI originated in Cornwall in 1994 after two local fishermen lost their lives in plain view of the recently closed Coastguard lookout station at Bass Point near the Lizard Peninsula. The organisation is now a registered National Charity with almost 60 stations around the UK coast manned by some 2600 volunteer watchkeepers.
Our mission is to keep watch on vessels at sea, mainly those that are more vulnerable such as local fishermen, potters, leisure sailors and those doing water sports. We also watch the Southwest Coast Path for vulnerable users, such as individual walkers and runners. Working alongside our partners at HM Coastguard and the RNLI, the "Eyes and Ears" of NCI provide a vital contribution to the UK Search & Rescue community.
We're looking for volunteers to train to become NCI watchkeepers at the St. Agnes Head station. The role is open to everyone; no prior experience is necessary and full training is provided.
We operate 365 days a year during daylight hours from our stunning clifftop location at St. Agnes Head. We're very flexible and watchkeepers are not tied to a hard and fast commitment; although we do ask members to volunteer for around three 3-hour watches per month.
More background information about the organisation is available at the NCI website:
