Role description

This is a meaningful opportunity to help build a hopeful, community-driven environmental project in Cornwall at an early stage of development.

Ocean Buffer Project is currently looking for passionate, reliable people to join our Advisory Board and help shape the future of the organisation. We are also interested in hearing from people who may eventually wish to become a CIC Director and take a more active leadership role within the project.

We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly those with experience or interest in areas such as environmental science, marine conservation, community engagement, fundraising, safeguarding, education, biodiversity, accessibility, land restoration, communications, governance or practical project development. You do not need to be an expert in every area - commitment, honesty and a willingness to support a growing grassroots project are just as important.

Advisory Board members may help by:

• Attending occasional online or in-person meetings

• Offering advice, feedback and practical support

• Supporting project planning and decision-making

• Helping strengthen safeguarding, inclusion and governance

• Assisting with partnerships, outreach or funding where appropriate

• Supporting the long-term vision and sustainability of the organisation

Potential Directors would gradually become involved in helping oversee the CIC itself, including supporting organisational responsibilities and helping guide the project strategically as it grows.

Current project activities include restoring agricultural land for biodiversity, creating meadow and coastal planting areas, building low-impact community infrastructure and preparing for future marine phytoplankton cultivation work focused on carbon removal and ocean literacy.

We aim to keep volunteering flexible, supportive and accessible. Training and guidance can be provided where needed and we actively work to reduce barriers to involvement. Travel expenses can be covered and meetings can often be attended remotely where appropriate.

Benefits may include:

• Access to Cornwall VSF volunteer support and training opportunities

• DBS checks where required

• Access to NCVO volunteer benefits through our membership

• Opportunities to help shape an innovative environmental project from the ground up

• Being part of a friendly, values-led team focused on practical climate action and community wellbeing.

Organisation Information

Ocean Buffer Project CIC is a community-led environmental organisation based in Cornwall, focused on restoring hope through practical climate action. Our long-term goal is to develop accessible, low-impact ways for communities to engage with carbon removal, ocean literacy and biodiversity restoration.

We combine land restoration with marine conservation in an unusual and hands-on way. Current work includes regenerating agricultural land for wildlife, sowing meadow habitats, growing coastal plants and creating accessible volunteering opportunities for local people. In the future, the site will also host our marine phytoplankton cultivation project, where microscopic marine algae are grown on land to help capture carbon dioxide while teaching people about the vital role the ocean plays in regulating the climate.

Everything we do is designed around low-impact principles. We prioritise recycled and reclaimed materials, food-safe and non-toxic processes, minimal emissions and inclusive volunteering opportunities that remove barriers to participation wherever possible.

Our mission is not only to support the environment, but to help people feel connected to it again. We believe climate action should feel tangible, hopeful and accessible to ordinary people.
