Role description

Cotehele is an atmospheric Tudor house with Medieval roots, a working mill on an historic quay, a glorious garden with valley views and an expansive estate. Cotehele has a team of almost 300 volunteers that help as many people as possible utilise and benefit from this place.

 

Role summary

Are you passionate about engaging children and young people in nature and cultural heritage? Do you believe in ensuring all younger generations feel welcome and included? Volunteer to help inspiring the National Trust’s supporters of the future.

What's involved? 

• Supporting or leading a variety of activities and projects with or for children & young people such as family events, family and youth volunteering, school engagement and careers engagement.
• Volunteering with partners and community groups who engage children & young people, such as Duke of Edinburgh, Scouts/Guides and youth clubs.
• Championing the National Trust’s core aims of conserving nature, beauty and history for everyone, for ever.
• Being a friendly face and ambassador for the National Trust.
• Getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures and brief schools upon arrival
• Lead engaging history tours of the house and facilitate activities such as costume dressing and artefact handling.
• Lead nature walks around the gardens and the Quay and facilitate activities such as pond dipping.

 

This role will suit you if you are...

• A good communicator and confident to volunteer with a variety of people
• Passionate about enabling children & young people’s engagement in nature and heritage
• Looking to use the skills you already have around volunteering with children & young people, or keen to develop these skills
• Available during weekdays during the school term.
• Keen to learn more about Cotehele and the wider estate.
• Able to volunteer alone or part of a team with a positive, ‘give it a go’ attitude
• You don’t need teaching experience to join our friendly team, just an enthusiasm to engage young people in Cotehele and its history.

• Help bring to life the history of Cotehele, highlight the importance of conversation and share your knowledge with visiting schools and groups of young people.
• Give schools a dynamic and engaging experience through a range of activities and stories.
• Use and develop your strong people skills to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment.
• Contribute to making Cotehele more accessible and relevant to a variety of people.

 

This is a flexible role for when children and young people activities are booked in. We therefore welcome those who want to volunteer on a more ad hoc basis. Each role has a supportive team to work with and this brings with it a great sense of friendship and belonging.
