Role description

Role Summary

To work as a volunteer flower arranger as part of the team, led by the team leader, and to enhance the beauty and worship of the Cathedral by the use of arranged flowers and foliage, which are provided.

Expected Time Commitment

On average two to three hours per week, from 8.15am to 10.30am each Saturday, but occasionally on Friday mornings instead, depending on Cathedral events.  Arrangers are expected to attend on a regular basis but do not need to attend during Lent and Advent.  Arrangers meet briefly at the end of each session to discuss flower arrangement plans for the following week.

Duties

To arrange one large or sometimes two smaller flower arrangements on a pin-holder with mesh and with the use of cones if required each week, as allocated by the team leader.  Allocation of arrangement positions will vary according to the ability of each member of the team and will normally vary from week to week.  Some members undertake additional duties such as watering, conditioning and foliage collection.  This is arranged through the leader and is an optional extra duty.

All foliage, flowers and equipment are provided except secateurs and a pair of scissors.  Volunteers are asked to wear the tabard provided and a pair of flat, quiet shoes. (The tabard must be returned if you retire from the team).

Skills and Knowledge Required

A basic knowledge of flower arranging, the ability to work as part of a team but also to be able to work on your own initiative.  An understanding of the purpose of the Cathedral as a place of worship, and an ability to relate to occasional members of the public in a pleasant and welcoming way, while still working.

Qualifications Required

A flower arranging or floristry qualification or membership of a flower club would be desirable but is not essential.

Training

An induction in the Cathedral will be provided by an established member of the team, and additional training and support will be provided by other members of the team as and when required.

Safeguarding Training

All volunteer flower arrangers at Truro Cathedral are required to undertake 'Basic Awareness' safeguarding training, which can be completed online.

Physical Requirements

The ability to carry items such as buckets of flowers, container, work protection sheet and a can of water from the main workstation to the various locations. Good vision and the ability to manoeuvre up and down a small number of steps while arranging. The ability to clear up at the end of the session. It is the responsibility of each volunteer to ensure that they are covered by an anti-tetanus vaccine.

Parking

Parking may be available in the Cathedral car park but only on a first come first served basis and only while performing these duties, not at any other time. The car park now operates a number plate recognition system, so if you wish to park in the car park during your duty time, you will need to enter your registration number on either of the tablets in the cathedral or at the cathedral office in advance of volunteering. Also, please advise the office of any registration numbers of other vehicles you may drive.
