Land Cultivation Volunteer
Volunteers at Ocean Buffer Project will help restore and regenerate a small piece of Cornish land using low-impact, eco-friendly methods.
Current activities include preparing the site for a future polytunnel and workshop, sowing wildflower meadow areas, planting biodiversity hedging, creating raised flower beds from reclaimed materials and helping cultivate coastal and marine-supporting plants. We use traditional hand tools such as scythes, hoes and rakes wherever possible to reduce emissions, noise and disturbance to wildlife.
The project focuses on natural, organic processes and creating a welcoming, hopeful space for both people and nature. The site is set in a beautiful rural location near Falmouth with plenty of fresh air, wildlife and a friendly, supportive team environment. No previous experience is needed and volunteers can take part at their own pace.
As the project develops, volunteers will also have the opportunity to support our pioneering marine conservation work, including growing marine phytoplankton on land as part of a community-led carbon removal and ocean literacy initiative.
We are committed to reducing barriers to volunteering. Travel expenses can be covered and any essential equipment can be provided, including gardening gloves and wellies for volunteers who need them. Training and guidance are provided throughout.
Volunteer benefits include:
• Access to our raised beds for growing vegetables
• Access to Cornwall VSF volunteer support, training opportunities and wellbeing benefits
• DBS checks where required
• Access to NCVO volunteer benefits and resources through our membership
• Flexible and inclusive volunteering opportunities designed to support different needs and abilities
Ocean Buffer Project is a community-first environmental project focused on practical climate action, biodiversity restoration and reconnecting people with the sea - even from the land.
Ocean Buffer Project CIC is a community-led environmental organisation based in Cornwall, focused on restoring hope through practical climate action. Our long-term goal is to develop accessible, low-impact ways for communities to engage with carbon removal, ocean literacy and biodiversity restoration.
We combine land restoration with marine conservation in an unusual and hands-on way. Current work includes regenerating agricultural land for wildlife, sowing meadow habitats, growing coastal plants and creating accessible volunteering opportunities for local people. In the future, the site will also host our marine phytoplankton cultivation project, where microscopic marine algae are grown on land to help remove carbon dioxide while teaching people about the vital role the ocean plays in regulating the climate.
Everything we do is designed around low-impact principles. We prioritise recycled and reclaimed materials, food-safe and non-toxic processes, minimal emissions and inclusive volunteering opportunities that remove barriers to participation wherever possible.
Our mission is not only to support the environment, but to help people feel connected to it again. We believe climate action should feel tangible, hopeful and accessible to ordinary people.
