Role summary

The Lizard Wireless Station will be opening again in April for the 2025 season and we are looking to expand the volunteer team at this unique location. If only these walls could talk! That’s where Lizard Wireless Station tour guides make such a difference; they bring places to life with their passion for local history. Join our dynamic team and discover more about Marconi’s work on the Lizard.

What's involved?

• Welcoming every visitor to the Lizard Wireless Station
• Helping visitors discover more, making suggestions so they can enjoy their day, their way. Thinking about the needs of all visitors, including disabled people and families
• Using your knowledge and skills to give guided tours of the wireless station and answering questions about the history of the museum and the surrounding area (training provided)
• Inspiring visitors about the work of Marconi and helping visitors understand why we need to take care of special places
• Handling cash and logging sales of books and donations. Taking responsibility for security and locking up the museum
• Getting to know health and safety procedures

• AND there might be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with….
• N.B. You don’t need to be an expert in Marconi, communication or amateur radio, you just need to be friendly and enthusiastic about talking to people about local history
• Being part of a team that may need to adapt and change in response to local needs, National Trust priorities or changes to government guidelines e.g .Covid

We want all our volunteers to feel welcome and to have an equally positive experience when volunteering with us. So, volunteers will:

• Be provided with the necessary induction, training, equipment and reasonable adjustments to do this role well and safely
• Be offered expenses to cover agreed travel costs between home and place of volunteering.
• Have remote access to support, news and rotas via our volunteer website

This role will suit you if you are...

• Full of enthusiasm and keen to inspire visitors of all ages from all over the world
• Interested in local history and the work of Marconi – you don’t need to know the history of the universe, but as a museum tour guide you’ll pick up lots of facts and figures as you go along
• Happy to work alone in an isolated rural location and to take responsibility for handling cash and security
• Available for three - four hours at least once a fortnight
• Happy to complete online training in advance of coming to volunteer.
All National Trust volunteers will be asked to
• Respect and uphold the National Trust values whilst volunteering with us
• Complete training required of all NT volunteers and any role specific training
• Adhere to relevant policies and processes including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality and diversity
