Mencap - Stretch the Legs Visiting Volunteer

Local Area
Carrick (Truro, Falmouth & Perranporth & in between)
Role description

Stretch the Legs Visiting Volunteer

Are you a kind and patient person who enjoys getting outdoors and would help others to do the same? Could you spare some time 6 times a year for a fun visit with a person with learning disabilities?

We support a very friendly and welcoming gentleman in his 60s who loves to get out and about in the local area, perhaps to the beach to collect seashells, or to the farm to see the animals (his favourite animal is the pigs). We are looking for a volunteer to support him to do the things he wants to do, and to access the community and develop more social interaction. Initially the visits would be at his home and after some getting to know each other it may be possible to get out on trips accompanied by members of his care team, who know him well and are always available.

This gentleman has complex learning disabilities so experience in this area would be beneficial but not essential. He does not communicate verbally (although he can be very vocal!), but loves to interact with people in his facial expressions, and body language, and will lead you to things that he wants.

He lives in a care home where you will visit him, and where staff will support you to get to know him. Once you have got to know each other a little you may plan your trips out into the community.

You will need to have strong communication skills, and to be patient with those for whom communication can be a challenge.

Our volunteers are kind and passionate people. They are keen to challenge themselves and others for the best possible outcomes, and they are inclusive of everyone, regardless of disability.

Does this describe you? If so, please get in touch.

Mencap are strongly encouraging all our colleagues to have the Covid-19 vaccine as a way to help protect each other and the people we support.  This is becoming increasingly important as evidence is starting to grow that the vaccine could help stop the spread of the virus, as well as protecting the person vaccinated from getting very ill. In addition, you maybe asked to take a lateral flow test or wear PPE when you volunteer.

The Mencap visiting service was launched in 1963 and was designed to be a befriending service to adults with a learning disability for after their parents passed away.

His parents wanted to make sure that somebody would be able to visit him when they were no longer able.

To apply, you will first need to register to use the Mencap recruitment system.  Once logged in, you will then need to click the "apply" button, and fill in our 1 page application form.
