Volunteer with the Dreadnaught Centre

The Dreadnought Centre has been working with Children and Young People in Cornwall for 48 years since 1976.

The volunteering opportunities at the Dreadnought Centre are within the Aspires Project, a Socailisation programme for young people who have a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Condition and are of mainstream school ability.

The groups that volunteers participate in are during the evening, they work alongside the young people joining in fun activities to support with building confidence, self-esteem and social understanding.

What our volunteers say about being a volunteer

I have had to learn to play again as a child and this has opened a wonderful world of forgotten experiences that I had lost along my journey into adulthood. The gift of sharing the joy of play has changed my life and Aspires has become a part of my self-care process as a trainee counsellor. There is no higher reward than when a young person shouts out, ‘I am having the best time ever,’ because you know that they mean it and I have been part of that experience.

I enjoy being around teenagers, conversations and questions they ask. It is a joy to share their space.

To volunteer at Dreadnought you need to be over 18 years old, undertake an interview, induction, Safeguarding and Understanding Autism training, have a DBS check to enhanced level and provide 3 references.
