Role description

Dyslexia Cornwall is registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.  It was first established in 1991 by a small group of concerned parents who wanted to help dyslexic people of all ages to reach their full potential.

Over the past 25 years Dyslexia Cornwall has successfully provided high quality services to local people with dyslexia, their families, employers, educators and the wider community.

Dyslexia Cornwall works in partnership with the local authority, schools, training providers, Jobcentres, employers and the wider voluntary sector. Our volunteers and staff are trained to offer high quality information, advice and guidance on all issues relating to dyslexia.

We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join our extended team. We have the following roles available:

Helpline Advisor 

Give advice and guidance to a range of clients by phone or email.  Undertake research to underpin the advice given. Full training and support will be given.

The skills you will need:

  • Background or experience in education or training others (desirable)
  • Good listening skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Commitment to the work of Dyslexia Cornwall and the committee of trustees.
  • Positive telephone manner
  • Ability to give advice with impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • Good IT skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort needed.

Trustee - Chairperson 

Provide leadership and direction to the trustees, line Managing and working in partnership with staff and volunteers, contribute actively to the trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, agreeing policies, defining goals and agreeing key organisational objectives. Plan, set agendas and chair meetings.

  • Commitment to the work of Dyslexia Cornwall and the trustees
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of dyslexia (not essential but helpful)
  • The ability to facilitate focussed and relevant discussions, ensuring that all trustees are able to contribute and that no members are able to unduly dominate discussions at the expense of others
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Ability to think creatively
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Tact and diplomacy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidence

Trustee - Secretary

Ensuring meetings are effectively organised and minuted, maintaining effective records and administration and keep good communication and correspondence.

As well as the specific roles named above, we are looking for more individuals to join our team of trustees. There are no specific skills requirements for this role other than an interest in dyslexia and associated difficulties and a willingness to work as part of Dyslexia Cornwall trustees. We are particularly interested to hear from anyone with knowledge of PR, marketing and writing funding bids.
