Local Commissioner (Area Coordinator)

Local Area
Countywide (all of Cornwall)
Minimum Age

Role description

Join our 600+ volunteers and supporters who are already making a massive difference to girls and young women across Cornwall! If you love the ethos of Girlguiding but thought all our roles were running weekly meetings with our young members…think again!

Our commissioners lead Girlguiding in their area, supporting unit volunteers to provide amazing experiences for girls and young women. You’ll use your people skills to ensure units have the volunteers they need to thrive, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to spot skills in our volunteers and encourage them to try new things.

You will:

  • Coordinate and chair local meetings, allowing local volunteers to come together, receive updates and discuss challenges to find solutions;
  • Support volunteers to keep up to date with their learning and development opportunities, including safeguarding and first aid;
  • Visit local units to see guiding in action, ensuring safe and good quality guiding experiences are being provided for our young members;
  • Support volunteers to deal with safeguarding concerns, using Girlguiding’s established processes to ensure all our members are kept safe;
  • Hold a trustee role for your area, and sit on the county committee, influencing the way Girlguiding develops across Cornwall;
  • And, very importantly, celebrate the achievements of both the volunteers and young members in your area.

This is an incredibly varied, and flexible role and can be held as part of a team, ensuring your availability and skills are used to best effect. This is a great opportunity to make a positive difference in your community, while having fun, learning new skills and meeting new people.

You don’t need experience in Girlguiding, but do need to be supportive of the organisation’s vision and values.  Full training and support, as well as a mentor, will be provided, together with networking opportunities with commissioners from across the UK as well as the county.

Please note that this role does require the holder to be a member of Girlguiding and make their promise, therefore the role is only open to females, in line with Girlguiding’s Adult Members Policy.
