Role description

We are supportive, professional, rewarding and our goal is to provide fun and exciting experiences to young people, to help support them into responsible and productive adulthood through nautical activities and training..

 

Penzance Sea Cadets are seeking a new Chairperson to lead their Unit Management Team. This is an extremely rewarding volunteer role that directly supports the running of this longstanding youth charity. You will be joining a dynamic and friendly team of Trustees who support the financial, strategic and property aspects of the organisation. The Chairperson and Trustees do not directly work with our young people, but through their roles, support our operational volunteers who dedicate their time to preparing and running activities and training.

 

Our new Chairperson will initially have a thorough and detailed handover period with our current Acting Chairperson, who will then be remaining as part of the Unit Management Team as the Unit Treasurer. So ongoing support and advice will be available, from both them and the Unit's Commanding Officer.

 

Duties of the Chairperson include:

  • Organising and running regular Unit Management Team Meetings
  • Working closely with the Unit's Commanding Officer to oversee successful operations and training within the Unit.
  • Monitor health and safety, safeguarding, property matters and ongoing training and development for Unit Management Team Members.
  • Work closely with the Unit Treasurer on all Unit finances, including monitoring outgoings and approving expenditure, as well as supporting the generation of charitable income.
  • Work closely with the Team and supporting fundraisers to plan and organise charity events and activities to generate income for the Unit.
  • Supported by the Cornwall District Sea Cadets Chairperson, the South West Area Chairperson and the Area Volunteer Support Manager, ensure that Penzance Sea Cadets complies with all requirements of the Charity Commission and keep records up to date.

Candidates will ideally have the below skills and / or experience:

  • Professional and well organised
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Good IT Skills
  • Effective decision making skills

Volunteer time for this role is extremely flexible and other than attendance at a 6 weekly UMT Meetings (evening meetings), regular contact with other key volunteers and supporting fundraising events, all other duties can be carried out at your own time at home.
