Role description

Want to make a real difference to families with young children across Cornwall? Join Home-Start Kernow and be there for parents who just need a bit of extra support.

As a Home-Visiting Volunteer, you’ll visit a family once a week to offer friendly, non-judgemental support, a listening ear, a bit of encouragement, and practical help to help them feel more confident and less alone.

You don’t need to be an expert, just someone who understands the ups and downs of family life. We provide full training, ongoing support and regular supervision, so you’ll never feel like you’re doing this on your own.

What’s involved?

  • Weekly visits (around 3 hours including travel and notes)
  • Friendly, emotional and practical support for families
  • Free training and regular check-ins with our team
  • Ongoing learning and development

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Warm, reliable and non-judgemental
  • Good listeners with a caring nature
  • Parents or people with parenting experience
  • Happy to follow safeguarding and confidentiality guidance

If you’d like to give families the best possible start, we’d love to hear from you.

Organisation Information

Home-Start Kernow offers free, confidential support, friendship and practical help to parents of children under five in Cornwall, who are going through a difficult time.

Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very difficult, especially when children are young. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life, particularly if they have little support from family and friends when they need it most. For some parents it’s a particular struggle because they are also having to cope with issues such as post-natal depression, their or their child’s illness or disability, isolation or multiple birth.

That’s when parents need support. That’s when Home-Start Kernow can help.

A carefully selected volunteer, who has parenting experience themselves, regularly visits a family, in their own home, offering emotional and practical support through difficult times for as long as it is helpful or needed. We aim to work with families most in need with the volunteers we have on board. This friendly parent-to-parent support is a simple yet effective way of enabling families to get back on track.
