Volunteers needed for the coming season
Summary
Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital are seeking volunteers to support the daily caring duties, cleaning and operations of our hospital site during our 2026 season, May – October.
We are open 7 days a week, with a variety of opportunities available for volunteers to get involved with. Responsibilities can include cleaning of aviaries, laundry, assisting with telephone enquiries, general gardening and site maintenance.
The role requires you to be at least 18 years old, for all outdoor roles have a reasonable fitness level and be willing to work outdoors in all weathers. Volunteers must be confident working with wild seabirds and have a general interest in animal welfare.
Training, PPE, uniforms and wellies will be provided.
All online and in person training must be attended and completed before you can be onsite and start the position.
Due to our biosecurity measures, our volunteers must not own or care for any wild or domestic birds.
Volunteer Opportunities Available & Responsibilities:
Daily Opportunities:
- Volunteering in Aviaries
This role involves cleaning aviaries to a high standard, working with disinfectants, assisting with laundry and feeding patients.
- Assisting with Telephone Enquiries
This role is responsible for answering calls to members of the public, offering advice, guidance and signposting them to the correct place for care.
Weekly & Ad hoc Opportunities:
- Gardening and Site Maintenance
This role will help with the upkeep of our site through gardening work, maintenance general site, path cleaning and disinfection.
- Fundraising & Event Support
We’re looking for enthusiastic people to support our fundraising work. This would involve supporting to deliver campaigns (online and in person), representing us at events, advocacy, promotion and public engagement.
Commitment: A minimum of one 4 hours shift per week. To respond to the needs of the patients and the Hospital we are looking for volunteers to support us on weekdays and/or weekends.
Skills you need:
- Can communicate and follow instructions well
- Use initiative
- Work well within a team environment but also capable of working independently
- Care and compassion for wildlife and rehabilitation.

Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital Cornwall provides high quality care, currently with a focus on seabirds, from around the Cornish Coast. Established in 1928 the core of what we do remains the same - our aim is to treat and rehabilitate wild birds in our care and return them to the wild.
In the last two years, we worked with 15 different species of seabirds – 4 on the red list and 9 on the amber. We are proud of our contribution to Cornwall’s unique coast and marine environment and seascape.
