Volunteer Pony Checker
Role summary
Volunteer pony checkers help the rangers check ponies grazing on National Trust land in West Cornwall for conservation purposes, on a regular basis.
What's involved?
• Checking ponies; correct number of ponies are in the correct location
• Send confirmation that ponies have been checked at given location
• Notify any obvious pony welfare issues to an NT member of staff
• Checking water troughs. Check there is enough water in the trough. On cold days check for ice in the trough and break up if needed
• Check electric fencing, check for any fencing that may be down. Check only any obvious fencing that can be clearly seen.
• Check other pony related infrastructure for any damage/wear and tear e.g. temporary wooden stiles, electric fencing warning signs, pony grazing signs
• Checking land for over/under grazing, training will be given
• Let a member of staff know if there are any problems with any of the above
• Using an online rota to book when you will check the ponies
• Using the buddy system if checking ponies on your own

• Enjoys spending time outside, whatever the weather
• Happy to work with animals
• Reasonably fit and healthy, being able to walk up and down the Cornish coast path
• Passionate about West Cornwall, conservation and nature
• Available regularly at least once a week
