Volunteer with sensory impaired young people on activities - Open day

Local Area
Countywide (all of Cornwall)
Minimum Age
17+
Role description

The Sense Cornwall Get Out There (GOT) group organises activities for young people (11 – 18 years) with sensory impairments. Examples of activities include:
Swimming, cinema, bowling, beach picnics, theme parks, woodland walks, cycling, surfing, pottery, sailing, steam train rides, trips to land's end, etc.

Our group ‘days out’ across Cornwall are fun, fulfilling and enable these young people to make friends.

We require volunteers to support the young people on activities, helping them as they learn and explore.

What is involved in the volunteering?

Typically, you will be paired with a young person to accompany them on the activity with us. You will help them with the activity, whether it be supporting them to paint pottery, play bowling or go swimming.

Entry to activities and lunch is fully paid for. Volunteers can also claim for travel expenses.

No experience is needed. Every few months we can offer a half day training in deaf awareness, epilepsy, safeguarding, etc.

How often is it?

The frequency of activities depends on the time of season. Currently, in the summer period, every few weeks we will have an activity. Our activities are almost always on Saturdays, typically starting at 11am and finishing after lunch at 2pm. You can choose to attend as many activities as you like.

Why do you need volunteers?

As a small charity, the funding we get from sense is minimal. We have one full time employee and two part time employees. With up to 15 young people on a single activity, we wouldn't exist without our volunteers. There will typically be 10 - 15 volunteers like you on an activity with us.

This is your opportunity to help young disabled people experience life and have fun. If you are interested, please come along to our open morning. You will be joining us on an activity with the young people.

This will be held on Saturday 13th June at Paradise Park, Hayle-from 10am onwards.

If you would like to come or find out more information, email [email protected] or call Simon on 07798882496. Please give him your name, email and number.

Thank you most kindly

Some words from our volunteers

"I feel so much satisfaction from the smiles when the young people greet me. It feels like a very worthy event."

"All of my memories are favourites but the one that stands out is the boat trip to the Scillies, and the experience it gave those young people of being independent of their families, and the confidence to think for themselves in a safe environment."
