Role description

Our maintenance support volunteers form an important part of our team here at The Hugs foundation.  We couldn’t do the work we do without volunteers. We operate on a 40 acre site, which requires regular maintenance. You will be involved in helping to fix and make things, decorating and improving the animal care spaces and general DIY and yard tidying. Here are some examples:

  • Fixing any broken equipment such as wheelbarrows, brooms or buckets.
  • Using power tools to repair broken structures, such as stables, fencing and animal accommodation.
  • Pressure washing the yard, the horse lorry, muddy rugs, artificial grass mats and so on.
  • Painting and decorating varying areas of the yard.
  • Keeping the farm entrance tidy.
  • Building new animal accommodation such as hutches or rabbit runs.
  • Salting icy areas and protecting water troughs/pipes in the winter months
  • Completing small handyman/DIY jobs to support the yard team, for example putting up noticeboards, shelving, tack racks.
  • Harrowing fields, repairing or moving electric fencing, fixing fence charging units.
  • Maintaining hedging or helping with planting tree saplings.

We provide training to volunteers, including many aspects of health and safety, manual handling etc. We also offer the opportunity for volunteers to join in first aid and fire warden training courses from time to time if these are of interest.

You must be age 18 and over, and reasonably practical and competent at DIY type activity.

Organisation Information

The Hugs Foundation is a registered charity (1175633) and we rescue, rehabilitate and rehome unwanted and neglected horses and ponies. Our facilities and rescue animals allow us to create unique well-being interventions for children, young people, adults and the elderly, using a diverse range of therapeutic activities in a natural farm environment to help both animals and humans in need. In addition, we visit care homes, schools and other places within the community to support mental well-being outside of the farm facilities and help educate on animal welfare.
