Sand Dune Restoration Group - Mawgan Porth, Cornwall
Join one of our monthly volunteer task days! We are usually removing some of the invasive plants, which cover large areas of Mawgan Porth’s sand dune system. This involves using hand tools to dig into the sand, to remove roots and vegetation. Equipment is provided, including tea, coffee and biscuits! No experience is needed, just a willingness to get stuck in. Check out our Facebook page for the next date, timings are 10am - 1pm. The Dunies is a volunteer group, aiming to create a healthier sand dune system at Mawgan Porth - to be enjoyed by wildlife, humans and future generations.
Beginning in July 2024, The Dunies has concentrated on removing invasive species of plants, such as sea buckthorn and Japanese rose. This is because, over time, invasive plants can dominate a habitat and eradicate important native species. By removing them, space is created for native species to thrive - like the iconic marram grass, sea bindweed and sea spurge.
The work has been led by various local community members and during these early stages is being supported by the Making Space for Sand project, via Andy Nelson from Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
