At Royal Cornwall Museum, our team is supported by a group of dedicated volunteers who we simply couldn’t do without. We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and motivated people to grow our team of volunteers!  As a volunteer, you will be essential to the life of the museum. Responsibilities will include welcoming and engaging with visitors around the museum. You will aid visitors when needed and help maintain health and safety in the museum, among other tasks (please see below).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing a warm and welcoming environment for visitors to the museum.

  • Being a point of contact for visitors and answering queries in the gallery spaces.

  • Be available to provide information about the museum’s facilities, as well as objects on display and the museum’s collection within the scope of your knowledge (we don’t expect you to be experts!).

  • Ensure the gallery spaces are tidy and accessible.

  • Being an ambassador for Royal Cornwall Museum, communicating and contributing to its key aims and values.

  • Always abiding by health and safety regulations. Knowing who is the designated Duty Manager and reporting incidents and issues to them.

  • Using a radio to communicate with members of staff and other volunteers when necessary.

Other responsibilities may also include:

  • Leading tours of the museum.

  • Undertaking in-person visitor surveys.

  • Working with the collection when possible (e.g. Handling History pop ups).

  • Assisting with evening events.

  • Assisting with outreach and community engagement (e.g. ‘Guerilla Museum’).

  • Independent and collaborative research work.

  • Contributing ideas and feedback to improve the museum.

  • Help with temporary exhibition specific duties.

Key requirements and skills:

  • Good people skills. Visitor Experience volunteers should be good communicators, friendly and accommodating to the needs of visitors with a diverse range of needs.

  • Reliability. We are looking for volunteers with good timekeeping skills and attendance.

  • Have an interest in the Royal Cornwall Museum collection. You do not need a background in history or museums.

  • To be aged 18 and over.

  • We expect staff and volunteers to treat each other and all museum visitors fairly and with respect.
