Role description

Do you live near to Kings Wood just south of the village of London Apprentice? Would you like to assist visitors to understand more about the wood and its wildlife?

The role

This role supports your local woodland by raising awareness of the importance of woods, trees and the work of the Woodland Trust. We hope this will help visitors to understand more about the wood and its wildlife and in turn encourage them to visit respectfully and help us care for it. We want to increase its value in the eyes of the local communities and others who visit. We want visitors to know they are visiting a Woodland Trust site, and to do this we are increasing our on-the-ground presence. We will do this through engaging with onsite visitors, welcoming them, providing them with information to enhance their visit and supporting them to discover and learn about woods and trees.

Key activities

  • Represent the Woodland Trust by welcoming visitors to the site in a warm and friendly way, sharing your enthusiasm for the site.
  • Provide visitors with important information they will need to get the most out of their visit by orienting them to the site, drawing their attention to pathways, points of interest and other site features.
  • Respond to any questions and queries that visitors to the site may have, including accessibility. Directing visitors to the Woodland Trust website for further information and contact details.
  • Promote positive messaging by encouraging visitors to follow specific site guidance and proper use of the site. Report illegal activity directly to the local police and your volunteer manager as appropriate.
  • Engage with visitors as they leave the site, thanking them for their visit and providing them with information about future events, other sites to encourage return visits. Where appropriate, encourage visitors to provide feedback about their visit.
  • Support other Woodland Trust staff when on site engaging with visitors.
  • Distribute leaflets and other Woodland Trust resources where agreed.
  • Keep an eye on Woodland Trust signs and interpretation boards, ensuring they are up to date, clean and in a good condition. Keep leaflet holders topped up.
  • Monitor site condition, reporting any damage, incidents or issues to your volunteer manager.
  • Carry out litter picking on a regular basis.
  • Always act in accordance with the risk assessment for the task provided to you.
  • Adhere to the Volunteer Charter policies, procedures and guidelines, which can be found on Whittle, your dedicated volunteering website.

Experience required

  • A friendly, warm and comfortable manner when engaging with members of the general public. Confident and happy to initiate positive conversations with visitors to the site.
  • Using training to apply engagement techniques and have ability to recognise and walk away from situations of conflict.
  • Keep up to date with training as requested by the Woodland Trust.
  • Prepared to learn about the Woodland Trust and the site at which you are based so that you can pass on relevant and accurate information to visitors. Knowledge of site accessibility.
  • Good verbal communication skills are important, with a positive outlook.
  • Genuine interest and natural enthusiasm for conservation, wildlife and woodlands.
  • Availability to visit the site throughout the year and on a regular basis, particularly at busy times such as weekends and bank holidays, and at times agreed with your volunteer manager.
  • Ability to work within guidelines set by the volunteer manager.
  • An affinity with and commitment to the aims of the Woodland Trust.
  • Have an understanding of and support the Woodland Trust’s principles of Woodland Management.
  • A sensible regard for health and safety.
  • Attend training session prior to undertaking role.

 

Expenses

Expenses will be reimbursed for return journeys from home, based on public transport cost or mileage at standard rates for the Woodland Trust. Other expenses must be agreed in advance with your volunteer manager.
